Periodontics

Periodontics in the branch of dentistry that involves the diagnosis and treatment and prevention of infection in the gums around the teeth. It typically involves a bacterial infection that causes inflammation that leads to bone loss and eventual tooth loss.

At Sage Dental in Wall, NJ, Dr. Avi Israeli is committed to helping our patients keep their teeth and offer non-surgical periodontal therapeutic solutions whenever possible. In addition to preventative care at home our patients are evaluated thoroughly for any of the six main causes and symptoms related to periodontal disease so we don’t “wait and watch” as the disease progresses.

What are some of the symptoms of periodontal disease?

Multiple tooth loss and mobile teeth are advanced signs of periodontal disease. This is why we are “sticklers” for having our patients come in for regular maintenance treatment to avoid this.  Dr. Israeli’s comprehensive approach to his exams will make sure we identify persistent areas of bleeding, deeper pockets forming around the gums, sensitive teeth or chronic halitosis. Some systemic health conditions can increase the likelihood of gum problems. Among these include diabetes, pregnancy, and high blood pressure. If the gums around the teeth get puffy or swollen, they often pull away from the tooth, allowing more bacteria or food particles to accumulate in the pockets and get trapped in there. Poor oral hygiene, smoking, hormonal changes and some medications have been known to increase likelihood of developing problems with the supporting tissues around the teeth.

What are some of the treatments available for periodontal disease?

With proper home care and regular maintenance, we are able to put the disease on “hold”. One of the more common treatments is referred as a deep cleaning or a scaling and root planing. This is often done by the hygienist under local anesthetic. A thorough cleaning out of the pockets surrounding the teeth, removing the tartar that has accumulated, and any hardened calculus along with infected tissue will start the healing process.

What are the benefits of a deeper cleaning? Why can’t I just “brush harder” and floss more often?

There are numerous studies that show that the infection in your gums can affect not only your overall health, but specifically, it has been related to pregnancy issues, heart health issues and much more. Patients with diabetes are even more at higher risk.

Regular check-ups and cleanings aren’t just a good idea, they can you’re your life! It all begins with good oral hygiene habits to help maintain the teeth and any restorations in your mouth clean, so they don’t build up plaque. Plaque is the first phase of the sticky substance that starts the process moving along. Combine that with deep pockets around your teeth that are hard to reach with a toothbrush and you are looking at potential problems.
