Sinus Lift

Sinus lift surgery is a dental procedure that allows us to raise the height of bone such that we can place a dental implant into the upper arch jawbone. If a tooth is removed and no replacement tooth is done, the bone tends to dissolve. If it has been years after the original extraction, often there is not enough bone to support either a denture or even a dental implant post.

Dr. Avi Israeli at Sage Dental and Facial Spa in Wall, NJ, will evaluate your sinuses when doing his comprehensive exam. If you can benefit from additional height in the upper arch to allow better stability for either a denture or an implant, he will review with you the options going forward.

The rear portion of the upper jaw is where the maxillary sinuses are. It is the space between the orbit of the eye and the teeth. There is an air pocket there and when a tooth is pulled out, the air pocket sometimes pushes the sinus floor downward and the bone dissolves away. This is when a sinus graft is indicated.

There are two approaches to doing sinus augmentation bone grafting procedures. But gently pushing the floor of the sinuses upward and placing bone graft material in the new space, we can come back in several months later and have a new bone growth that has replaced the grafting material and now you have height to place an implant.

Typically, a sinus lift bone graft is done as a separate procedure to allow time for the bone to stabilize. In some cases, we will place the dental implant in at the same time if there is a minimum height of bone to hold it in place while the new bone forms around the implant fixture.

What is the recovery time after a sinus lift surgery?

A sinus lift procedure has a surprisingly quick recovery time and minimal discomfort. Because there aren’t really any nerves in the sinuses, it might be more of a mild pressure discomfort for a couple days that is felt during the healing phase.

How a sinus lift procedure can benefit you.

If you are missing teeth in the upper arch of your mouth, you have three options. You can do nothing and put your food in a blender before you eat it. You could wear a denture; or thirdly, you could have 1 or more dental implants with crowns, or have an implant-supported denture.

Without a sinus lift, there wouldn’t be enough bone to allow for a stable denture that stays in your mouth well, so placing a couple implants into the sinuses and letting them stabilize a denture is a great way to get a sturdier and more stable bite.
