What is Oral Pathology?
Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology describes the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of diseases that may affect the entire maxillofacial area including the lips, face, dental, and jaw areas. Oral pathology is essential to your dental care and overall health. Dr. Avi Israeli at Sage Dental and Facial Spa in Wall, NJ, will help diagnose and evaluate conditions that affect the oral cavity and surrounding areas including salivary gland cysts, TMJ, facial muscles, oral cavity infections, benign or malignant tumors, and other soft tissue disorders.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING YOUR DENTAL CONSULTATION?
The key first step in diagnosing a condition properly is being able to determine the exact cause of the condition. This can be through observation, a comprehensive exam, biopsy, x-rays, palpation, or other tests available in our office.
If the symptoms extend to the neck or throat area, we may involve an ear, nose, and throat medical doctor.
While in some cases a biopsy is helpful, it doesn’t always offer a definitive diagnosis. A biopsy is when a small piece of tissue is removed and observed under a microscope.
WHEN SHOULD YOU VISIT THE DENTIST?
If you have any type of hard or soft nodule or bump that seems to have grown recently or is tender or red, we encourage you to come to our office for a discrete evaluation of your mouth. Sometimes, these are from recurrent irritation in the area and sometimes they are more serious. In some cases, they could indicate a systemic issue also going on. Many health conditions show symptoms in the oral, mouth, and neck areas.
While most of them are treatable, it is always best to be safe and have any unusual bumps or tender spots looked at early on before they get worse. Some other conditions to be alerted of include, dry mouth, white patches in the mouth, bumps in the palate, unusual swelling in the gum tissue, difficulty in swallowing or speech, drooling, ulcers on the tongue, or a burning mouth syndrome.
