Inlays / Onlays

Porcelain Inlays and Onlays are a conservative approach to treating large restorations or broken teeth. An inlay is simply a large filling that is fabricated outside the mouth and then bonded into place. An onlay is simply a larger restoration that includes one or more cusps of the tooth.

At our office, we find that these types of conservative restorations not only satisfy an aesthetic need but also reflect our conservative alternative approach to dentistry.

As opposed to shaving off a millimeter of tooth all the way around a tooth to make room for a crown, if we can preserve one or more cusps of a tooth without compromising strength, we will strive to do that.

We use the CEREC machine to create these in-house porcelain restorations in the same-day. Using CAD/CAM technology, we scan the tooth before we start, drill out the decay then digitally scan the tooth again. The machine will “propose” a design that will replace the missing tooth structure and then mill it right there in our office out of a solid block of porcelain.

The bonded onlays and inlays blend into the surrounding tooth so well, many patients comment that they can’t even see them!

What are the benefits and advantages of porcelain onlays and inlays?

  • Because they are made out of porcelain, they will not discolor like composite fillings might.
  • Because we use a very accurate digital scan to make them, they are extremely accurate and precision fit.
  • Since the porcelain is similar strength as tooth structure, they are very durable and stable.
  • Since they save tooth structure – instead of drilling out for a crown, they are more conservative and preserve tooth structure.
