It is essential to have regular maintenance cleanings (periodontal cleanings), usually four times a year. At these cleaning appointments, the pocket depths will be carefully checked to ensure that they are healthy. Plaque and calculus that is difficult for you to remove on a daily basis will be removed from above and below the gum line.
A typical dental cleaning includes:
Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus or hardened plaque attaches itself to the surface of teeth and cannot be removed with daily brushing. During your cleaning, this hardened material will be removed with specialized dental techniques and instruments.
Removal of plaque: A sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth, plaque attracts harmful bacteria and debris that can cause tooth decay. During your exam, plaque will be removed from your teeth with specialized dental techniques and instruments.
Teeth polishing: Over time, food, coffee, wine and day to day wear and tear will stain and discolor teeth. Professional teeth polishing will erase staining and bring teeth back to their normal color.
After your dental exam and cleaning, your dentist or dental hygienist will discuss a recommended routine of dental care for you to continue in between visits.
